Good Vibrations in Birmingham.
As part of the Music for Youth’s summer
festival in Birmingham, students from the BRIT
school performed “One Vision/New Version”
in Centenary Square on the 9th July 2009. The
show was a celebration of how music can be re-interpreted
and re-discovered by new audiences. The school
brought a selection of
its Music and Musical Theatre students (a cast
of over 60!) to perform a vibrant and innovative
concert based on some of the country’s
best known pop songs of the last 18 years. Typically
imaginative, Music students re-arranged all
the songs with their own new interpretations
of them. They perform ed their “new”
version alongside the original. The show featured
a huge ensemble finale with a specially arranged
version of the Beach Boys’ classic, “Good
Vibrations” featuring young people from
across the West Midlands who also performed
in the gig. The BRIT School went to Birmingham
because it is proud to be associated with a
brand new academy with a planned opening in
the city’s Eastside in 2011. The new academy
will provide state of the art education with
a specialist focus on digital media, the creative
and performing arts. The academy will be modelled
on many aspects of the BRIT School. This concert
aims to show how the partnership between the
two schools will continue to flourish in the
future, proving that the BRIT School vision
can be re-worked, giving the West Midlands its
very own new version of something very special!

touring at the Warehouse Theatre in May. (Box office
number 0208 680 4060 and website)
Written by Theatre department Director Imogen Brodie
and features Theatre staff Simon Stephens and Sarah
Niven performing. 2009 is the 20th anniversary of
the fall of the Berlin Wall. This play explores the
story of Pieter and Anna, a brother and sister who
are separated the night the Berlin Wall goes up. Pieter
is a drag artiste who works in the West; the day after
the wall goes up Pieter must make a choice; either
return home and face the restrictions of the East,
or find freedom in the West. Alone. The play sees
past and present existing together on stage, as events
either side of the wall conspire to dominate the rest
of Pieter and Anna's lives.

Spinebreakers:
In
an attempt to engage young people to read cutting edge teenage
fiction, The BRIT School has become involved with a new website
called Spinebreakers,
run by Penguin Books, which is also put together and edited
by young people across the country. Spinebreakers involves
young readers with reviewing new books, interviewing the authors
themselves, and producing creative work either in the form
of short stories or video responses. Several BRIT School students
are part of the core editorial team, and as such are helping
form the agenda for youth fiction in the 21st century. Many
other students are also producing content for the site as
sub-editors and contributors. Continued

Carousel: Huge success for the latest Musical Theatre
Production. There were four versions of the show performed
over four nights. Each cast had its own distinct energy;
all
four were impressive, showing the whole year group’s
talent and enthusiasm for large scale productions. As usual,
we were lucky enough to benefit from the expertise and creative
brilliance of the Technical Theatre Department. We are also
extremely grateful to the Music Department for their wonderful
musicians who contributed so skillfully to our orchestra.
