The BTEC First Diploma in Broadcast Media
This course is strongly committed to providing students
with the opportunity to explore a wide range of media including
TV, Radio, Film, Print and Multimedia at KS4. We offer an
exciting, creative course that involves the study of both
traditional and digital media practices. The course incorporates
both the theoretical and practical application of media,
allowing students to combine their knowledge and skills
in the creation of media products.
Course details:
The BTEC First Diploma in Media is a two-year qualification
comprising seven coursework units (the course has no examinations).
All students follow core studies in Introduction to Media
Industries, Research for Media Production and Introduction
to Media Audiences and Products as well as introducing students
to specialist units such as Video Production, Photography
Techniques and Audio (Radio) Production. Students will begin
a journey here that prepares them for further study at Post-16
and may prepare them to work in a media industry
Practical skills you will develop include the use of
• A fully equipped TV studio to produce ‘live’
TV shows
• Digital video cameras and digital editing software
to create moving image products
• Foundation radio training, including the production
of live programmes where students learn to present and produce
their own shows
• 35 mm black and white film processing and digital
photography in the production of original imagery
• Specialist design software enabling students to
produce creative outcomes
As well as the development of creative and technical skills,
students will develop their communication and analytical
aptitude through the theoretical study of broadcast and
digital media.

• Ten High Definition digital video cameras
• Seven Apple Mac editing stations with Final Cut
Pro software
• 35 mm black and white film processing darkroom and
studio
• Computer rooms complete with specialist design software
• Ten mini-disc recorders
• Three classrooms with HD television, video projection
and DVD playback
• Broadcast standard television studio and gallery
Each year in July our KS4 students help to run BRIT FM,
the School's radio station, for a ten day broad-cast to
Croydon and the surrounding area. Students plan and produce
their own shows alongside our Post-16 students.
We hold showcases and video screenings of practical work
completed by our students throughout the two years of the
course. Professional industry standard facilities and equipment,
coupled with high quality teaching combine to provide students
with a wide array of practical and theoretical skills.
