The Music courses offer students the opportunity to develop a range of musical skills with the emphasis on Vocational Training. Preparing and rehearsing for live performance gives students the opportunity to work with other musicians on cover versions and original material. They are encouraged to develop their practical skills both as soloists and in ensemble settings. They are also encouraged to broaden their range of performance experience so will work on projects in a range of styles and genres.

Non practical elements of the courses include the study of theory and harmony, listening and aural skills, midi sequencing, recording, ethnomusicology, music industry and the study of both the history of Western Classical music and 20th and 21st century Popular music. The courses are designed to equip students with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to enable them to work in the Music Industry in a whole range of guises. Students who graduate from the school are as likely to be producers or engineers, teachers, or session musicians as they are to be Performers.

We encourage all musical tastes and styles and, in addition to many drummers, guitarists, vocalists and keyboard players have had instrumentalists here ranging from bassoonists to bagpipers. There is an emphasis on pop/rock/jazz idioms in performance but students are equally likely to find themselves singing in a 5-part Elizabethan Madrigal or participating in South Indian konokol as they are re-creating a pop classic.

We are equipped with 3 large rehearsal studios, many small practice rooms, a fully-equipped Industry standard Recording Studio and a G5 Apple Mac midi suite in addition to a small keyboard room and access to regular classrooms.

The students enjoy a range of performance opportunities. Recent shows at school have taken place in the foyer and in the school’s Obie Theatre. Outside school many of our students have been fortunate enough to play at The Roundhouse in Camden and at The Glastonbury Festival in addition to many other local and national venues and events.
