Bright Lights, Big City is an exciting and challenging piece that the students have worked hard to realise. It challenges our needs and expectations of success, happiness and fulfilment, and the pathways that are mapped out by choices that we make along the way.
The piece is stylised in its nature. Although it offers quite a naturalistic insight into Jamie’s story, the piece is underpinned by the style specific from 80’s New York. This is apparent in the choreographic and abstract elements of the piece. Jamie offers us a more universal connection of a person trying to find their way in the world.
The company have spent time talking about finding a collective journey through the piece, defining meaning with knowledge of time and place from solid research. BLBC creates challenges for the cast as the text is relatively sparse, giving us a slice of life over a complete and contextualised story. BLBC approaches quite mature ideas that the company have approached and researched thoughtfully and sensitively.
