Broadcast Digital Communication (BDC) Media

The BDC courses provide the opportunity for highly creative students committed to working in the Media industry the opportunity to develop their skills as film and television writers, directors, producers and editors, broadcast journalists, interactive media designers, photographers and critical theorists. All the BDC courses enable students to develop industry relevant vocational skills within a specialist up to date department. The BDC department teaches the BTEC Extended Diploma Creative Media Production for post 16 strand students and the BTEC Diploma in Creative Media Production for pre 16 strand students. The department offers AS/A2 Media Studies, AS/A2 Film Studies and City and Guilds Photography for post 16 non-strand students and GCSE Media Studies for non-strand pre 16 students.

The Students

The BDC department has a reputation for producing young media professionals with industry knowledge of digital applications who are highly creative, ambitious people with an outstanding digital skills portfolio. Our students have the choice to work directly within the media industry or to further their education and apply for University. Our alumni have graduated from a range of Universities including Bournemouth, Ravensbourne, Westminster and Leeds. We are proud of our ex-students and they have progressed to gain jobs as media professionals across a wide variety of media.

The Work

The range and depth of work produced by BDC students is vast. The following subjects make up the full programme of study: Video Production including the making of Music Videos, TV dramas, film openings, documentaries, short films; Radio Production including news production, speech packages and the exciting prospect of producing and presenting BRIT FM; TV Studio Production and the creation of original and engaging TV magazine shows using green screen technology; Photography both traditional black and white film processing and creative DSLR photography using our photographic studios to produce vibrant fashion shoots; Interactive Media Design and the production of websites, digital portfolios, 3D animation, motion graphics and digital design and Critical Theory including Film and Audience Studies.

Links

The department has strong links with the local and wider community with students and ex-students working alongside each other on a range of diverse projects. Recent projects have included producing documentaries at St.Christophers Hospice, conducting film, editing and photography workshops at St.Giles Special School, the creation of TV and Radio shows with Selhurst Boys School, broadcasting live from the Croydon Clocktower and The Pineapple Club an over 60s Afro-Caribbean club broadcasting live on BRIT FM. The department also organises a range of trips and outside speakers for our BDC students to experience, these have included a pre-view screening of Slumdog Millionare and a Q & A session with Danny Boyle, trips to the London Film Festival and talks by the BBFC, Channel 4 and MTV. We have hosted a range of industry professionals including freelance directors and editors, broadcast journalists, TV producers, post-production houses and music video specialists. We are also continuing to foster links with Channel 4, BBC London and Bournemouth University.
 
An online presence, The Golden Obies and BRIT FM are just a few ways the department showcases student’s creative work. At the completion of student’s Video and TV production work, projects are uploaded to the department’s website enabling BDC students to gain an instant audience for their work. The Golden Obies is the department’s annual moving image awards ceremony held in October where all BDC students have the opportunity to have their work exhibited on a cinema size screen with a judging panel made up of industry professionals and ex-BDC students with the chance of winning an award in front of their peers. BRIT FM is run by the BDC department and culminates in a two week RSL broadcast in July and gives our students the chance to write and produce their own radio shows that broadcast live to Croydon and the surrounding area and also online via our website.
