BTEC Subject Information
The BTEC is a specialist vocational qualification highly valued in industry and higher education alike. It encourages and stimulates student achievement through practical learning and forms of assessment, based on applied knowledge and understanding of the relevant subject areas.
All BTEC qualifications are made up of a common core of units and a range of chosen specialist units to allow teachers to develop defined pathways to match student needs and future destinations. There are four types of qualification (Certificate, Subsidiary Diploma, Diploma and Extended Diploma), which may be studied at different levels within the Quality and Credit Framework (QCF). Each unit is graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.
At Key Stage 4 students follow a BTEC Level 2 First Extended Certificate in their chosen arts area. This Level 2 qualification is currently equivalent to three GCSEs at A* - C, with the Distinction representing A*/A, Merit a B and Pass a C.
These Key Stage 4 qualifications are being reviewed by Edexcel, in the light of Government changes, so the details contained in this prospectus are for guidance and may be subject to change.
