Course Details

The Musical Theatre KS4 course provides students with the opportunity to explore a wide range of performance styles with particular emphasis on the potential of integrating the performing arts.  The course is designed to give equal focus to dance, acting and singing and the development of these performance disciplines.  Students study the BTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre).

Musical Theatre students are typically versatile and flexible in their approach to performance.  The demands of the course are such that students need an energised and committed approach to developing both their practical skills and academic appreciation of the arts.

BTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre)

The Musical Theatre qualification develops the students' understanding of performing arts in its broadest sense. Students work through a range of assignment projects which cover the following key areas:

  • individual showcase
  • preparation, performance and production
  • the performing arts industry
  • musical theatre skills
  • devising performance work
  • performing scripted plays
  • movement skills

The course would suit any young person who is committed to the potential of combining the performing arts and is passionate about integrated performance work.

It is a vibrant course that offers exciting performance opportunities as an integral aspect of the students' learning.  The course provides a range of written tasks designed to complement the students' all round skills.

Students are expected to work generously within a spirit of co-operation and hard work.

The course would suit students who thrive on the challenges of major performance projects.  We look for those who are totally committed to the learning of all performance disciplines and styles.

There are opportunities for students to work with visiting professionals and to take part in trips to the theatre.

Onward Destinations

Students typically progress to the very popular and successful Post-16 Musical Theatre course.  In some cases students may decide to specialise in one specific art form and may apply to other courses that are available at Post-16.
