Visual Arts and Design

The Visual Arts & Design department is a vibrant and forward thinking Strand Area that is strongly committed to giving students a broad range of Art & Design experiences across Key Stage 4 and Post 16. We offer an innovative approach to making work through courses that involves both traditional and experimental explorations of materials and concepts. We are involved in exploring new technologies within contemporary practice and strive to give students the essential practical, written and verbal skills in communicating effectively ideas in their own work. As a department we take the vocational context of all of our work very seriously and each project supports the development of the students not only as Art & Design Practitioners but also as professionals.

To support the broad range of specialist areas we cover the department has a wide range of excellent facilities, including; traditional art studios for 2D & 3D work, a photography darkroom and studio, specialist textiles and print equipment and two computer suites; with both Mac and PC packages for developing art & design work. Students develop work in a variety of media, including Fine Art, Graphics, 3D Design, Fashion Illustration, Video, Performance and Photography.

We believe that the support and guidance we give to our students is exceptional and that that goes hand in hand with providing a safe, secure, vibrant and positive working environment for all of our students to grow and develop in, here are a few of the comments that our students have made about their time with us so far:

Zoe - Year 11:

Why did you apply to join The BRIT School?

I had always had an interest in art and from previously visiting the school for music and dance performances I knew I loved the atmosphere and the mutual respect everyone had towards each other. The open evening had then given me an insight into the VAD course which I then knew I would love and benefit from.

Dee - Year 13:

How do you think your time here might benefit you in the long run?

“I have learnt who I am as a person and have made great relationships on all levels. BRIT has opened up new doors and taught me that ambition gets you places.

What are your aspirations when you leave?

I would like to work with people, within art which is something BRIT has made me want to do. Next step is University and then the world is my oyster.

Matt - Year 13:

Why did you apply to join The BRIT School?

Because the school has a lot of opportunity and always you learn to develop ideas and techniques and experiment with ideas you wouldn’t be able to do anywhere else.

Mina - Year 11:

What have you enjoyed most about working in VAD?

“I’ve enjoyed the friendly and relaxed atmosphere and how close the teachers are. It makes you feel as though you can ask them for support whenever you need it. I’ve also enjoyed the amount of facilities available and all of the different topics we’ve covered.”

Penny - Year 12:

What have you enjoyed most about working in VAD?

I’ve enjoyed working with amazingly lovely, talented teachers and students who shared the same amount of enthusiasm as I have and working with different types of mediums that really opened up my artistic spectrum.

Sally - Year 13:

Why did you apply to join The BRIT School?

Because I liked the look of the course and thought it would offer me more opportunities and a better experience than anywhere else.

Megan - Year 13:

How do you think your time here might benefit you in the long run?

Being here has helped me decide the specific career I want to pursue; it’s helped me gain a strong portfolio for uni’s etc.

What are your aspirations when you leave?

I plan to go to University and study animation and break into the industry hopefully and do animation production.

Lauren - Year 13:

Why did you apply to join The BRIT School?

I applied to The BRIT School because I had a real love for doing art and when I came to the open evening at The BRIT it looked perfect for fulfilling my ambition for future in art.
