Carollyn was born in Ashton-under-Lyne and grew up in Leeds, where from a very early age music became one of her greatest joys. She took every opportunity to sing and play, learning the flute and piano and becoming a cantor at Leeds Cathedral. At nineteen she came to London to study piano at the Guildhall School of Music. Her true passion being singing, on leaving the Guildhall she set out on her journey to becoming a singer, studying with many highly esteemed teachers such as Mary Hammond, Paula Anglin, Emma Kirkby and Sally Burgess. She also studied acting at Richmond Drama School with the inspired coach Delia Lindon. She immersed herself in all styles of music including classical, jazz, folk, celtic rock and musical theatre. This led her to songwriting and performing as Astraea, through which she met her husband to be, composer Mark Glentworth, and with whom she has collaborated on songs and as a librettist on two operas. As a singer Carollyn has performed in a diverse cross section of music from early music groups to experimental projects, including performances at the Brighton Festival, Waterloo Tunnels and the ICA with composer Alex Nikiporenko and artist Matthew Stone. Carollyn is also a founder member of the Nightingale Consort www.nightingaleconsort.com.
Carollyn's teaching reflects the wide experience of musical styles she has encountered in her own career. As a teacher her main aim is to give each student the techniques they need to be able to express themselves fully and find their own individual voice whether it be through singing, piano or songwriting.
