Josh Berger CBE (Chair)

Josh Berger CBE is a highly respected American-born, UK-based business executive and film and TV producer with over 35 years’ experience in the film, TV, games and media industry globally.

Berger was a senior executive at Warner Bros. Entertainment for over three decades. He most recently served as President & Managing Director of Warner Bros. Entertainment UK, Ireland and Spain and President of the Harry Potter Global Franchise team at Warner Bros. During Berger’s tenure, there was a massive increase in the scale of Warner Bros.’ business in the UK, including acquisitions of numerous television production companies and video games studios. Berger was also instrumental in the ground-breaking acquisition and development of Leavesden Studios, a £100 million investment, which was the first studio of its kind to be built in the UK in 70 years and the only studio facility outside of the US to be owned and operated by a Hollywood studio. The site is now also home to the hugely successful Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter.

Berger was also Chairman of the Board of Governors of the British Film Institute (BFI), as appointed by the Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Culture in 2016. The BFI is the UK’s lead organisation for film, TV and the moving image.

Currently, Berger is producing Guy Ritchie’s upcoming film, The Interpreter, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, as well as being a producer of the Tony-award winning Broadway musical Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations. He is also an executive producer of the third instalment of the Fantastic Beasts film series, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore and the BBC documentary Fantastic Beasts: A Natural History.

Berger also sits on the Board of Directors of Secret Cinema, which creates immersive theatre-like live experiences based on leading IP.

He is also a Board Director of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA); the Chairman Emeritus of Chickenshed Theatre Trust, a pioneer in inclusive theatre, after having served as Chair from 2012-2019; a Member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and the British Screen Advisory Council; and a Director of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences since 2014.

Berger grew up in Los Angeles and attended Beverly Hills High School before graduating from Harvard College in 1989. In 2002, he completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. He has lived and worked in the UK for 25 years, before which he lived in Spain, France, Italy, and the US.

Berger was appointed a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s 2012 Birthday Honours List for services to the UK’s creative industries.

Kate Ambrosi

Kate Ambrosi was appointed as a trustee of the school in June 2019. She is a member of the Curriculum & Student Welfare Committee. Kate began her career as a teacher; spending many years working in Croydon’s schools. On leaving teaching Kate became an education adviser for Croydon Council, supporting schools and colleges to improve standards and broaden the curriculum to meet the needs of students and their future employers. In this position Kate worked with The BRIT school and got to know the school very well. Kate’s latest role in Croydon Council has been Head of Economic Development. This role involves working with all elements of the economy, including colleges and the business world, to increase the prosperity of the borough.

Paul Burger

Paul was appointed a Trustee of the School in 2011 and was elected Chair of the Governing Body in 2012.  He served two three-year terms, stepping down as Chair in August 2018.  He is currently a member of the Finance & Audit, Fund-raising and New Revenue Streams Committees.

Paul's career spans more than 40 years working with music artists of very diverse backgrounds in a variety of locations.  Prior to founding his own company Paul spent 27 years in senior management positions with Sony Music International including serving as President, Europe, Middle East, and Africa (2000-03), as Chairman & CEO of Sony Music UK & Ireland (1993-2000); President Sony Music Canada (1989-1993); VP Marketing Sony Music Europe (1986-89).

SohoArtists, founded in 2003, is a boutique artist management company focused largely on new and developing talent.  He works with one of the most important World Music artists of today, award-winner Yasmin Levy (Adama Music) as well as with Mercury Music Prize nominated and BBC Folk Music Award winnerfolk artist Sam Lee

SohoArtists runs a consultancy arm for artists, labels, retailers and others interested in engaging with the music industry.  Since its IPO, Paul has been a non-executive director of Hipgnosis Songs Fund Ltd, a FTSE-250 company.

Paul is also a Director of The Brit Trust Ltd where he serves as Chair of the Finance and Investment Committee; is a Custodians Council Member of the Music Managers Forum (UK); and continues to serve as a Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania Foundation (UK) Ltd.  At the University of Pennsylvania, as well as in the UK for New York’s Metropolitan University, Paul gives occasional guest lectures on arts management

Madelaine Cooper

Madelaine was appointed a Trustee of the School on 8 December 2015 having previously been elected a Parent Governor of the School in 2013.  She is a member of the PR/Marketing and Governance Committees. 

Madelaine is a talent broker specialising in the creative industries sector.  Clients include many large and small branding and communications agencies in the UK and beyond as well as commercial companies such as University of the South Bank, Capita, Citibank, Balfour Beatty, Waitrose, Philips, Sainsburys, ITV and Dyson with whom she has worked on the development and growth of their own internal creative and innovation teams. 

Madelaine is often asked to participate in Career Forums and to provide coaching to individuals as well as to companies.  She specialises in working with creative people to help them present themselves in an effective and relevant way.

Seeing changing business needs, Madelaine has now created Strategic Design Resourcing with two partners to respond to the need for service designers who can deliver effective responses in the overlap between technology, creativity and end user needs. 

Prior to creating MCV Recruitment in 1995, she worked in various sectors of the branding, communications and creative industries in the UK and New York.

She is married with one son who attended The BRIT School until recently. 

Maggie Crowe OBE

Maggie was appointed a Trustee of the School in 2007.  She is a member of the PR/Marketing, Curriculum & Student Welfare and Personnel Committees and leads on safeguarding issues on the Governing Body.

Growing up and then marrying locally, Maggie is at home around Selhurst and Croydon.

Maggie’s role as Director of Events and Charities for The BPI (the trade association for the British record industry) is crucial for the School as any funds raised for their annual BRIT Awards show, BRITs Classics and BRITs Icons are donated to the BRIT Trust. The BRIT Trust is the major co-sponsor along with the DfE that built and conceived The BRIT School.

From her first job in the music industry working in Croydon for Steve Mason (Windsong Record Exports) to now - her passion for music and more importantly for The BRIT School is extraordinary.

Angela Ferreira

Angela was appointed a Trustee of the School on 8 December 2015.  She is a member of the Governance and Principal’s Performance Management Committees, and she is affiliated to the Film & Media Production department in the School.

Angela is a Television Producer who has worked for all the major UK broadcasters at a senior level including internally and externally for the BBC, Channel 4, Sky, Radio 1 and as an independent producer for ITV, Channel 5 and Reelz in the US. She has also produced televised events and branded content for Government, NGO's and corporate clients in the UK, USA and across Europe. 

Angela is a guest lecturer at The National Film and Television School where she sits on the TV Advisory Board and is Chair of The Royal Television Society Diversity Committee.

She also produces events and sessions for the RTS and Children’s Media Conference in a voluntary capacity.

James Hillier (Parent Governor)

James was appointed as parent governor in December 2020. He is on the Commercial and Estates Steering Groups. James studied English Literature at Kings College London and then went on to train as an Actor at RADA, graduating in 1998.

In theatre he has worked in the West End, Broadway, Royal Court, NT, Almeida Theatre, The Young Vic, Manchester Royal Exchange and the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh. He has over 40 screen credits, was a series regular in Season 1 & 2 of The Crown for NETFLIX along with regular roles on TV shows including EastEnders and Holby Blue.

James is the Artist Director of award-winning Defibrillator Theatre. The company have produced plays on and off the West End and in New York. He has directed numerous productions including developing new writing, and received an OFFIE nomination for the World Premiere of Mike Bartlett’s first play Not Talking. He created The Hotel Plays by Tennessee Williams which premiered at the Grange Hotel, Holborn in 2012 and later moved to The Langham, London in 2014. Other productions include Sunnymead Court (which received 4 OFFIE noms including Best Production), A Lie of the Mind by Sam Shepard, Hard Feelings by Doug Lucie and Insignificance by Terry Johnson in New York. 

He has worked as a Director and Facilitator for the National Theatre Connections programme and directed in drama schools including the musical, The Life, at Central School of Speech and Drama. James has directed a number of shorts, winning awards at Tribeca Film Festival in New York and SXSW.

James has a son in the Music Technology strand in Year 12.

Cush Jumbo

Cush Jumbo OBE is an actress, writer and alum of The BRIT School where she studied Theatre. She then went on to train on the BA (Hons) Acting course at Central School of Speech and Drama and in 2019 received an OBE for her contribution to drama.

Cush won the Ian Charleson Award for her role as Rosalind in As You Like It (2011) and received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for her role as Mark Antony in an all-female cast of Julius Caesar (2012) at the Donmar Warehouse. Cush is the author of Josephine and I, a one-woman play about jazz singer Josephine Baker, which premiered at the Bush Theatre, London in 2013 . She won an Emerging Talent Award at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards in November 2013 for her performance and the show was developed for transfer and began previews in 2015 at The Public Theater in New York.

She made her Broadway debut in the autumn of 2014 when she appeared in the transfer of the Royal Court Theatre production of The River by Jez Butterworth, alongside Laura Donnelly and Hugh Jackman. Cush is now very well known for her starring role as attorney Lucca Quinn in the CBS legal drama series The Good Wife (2015–2016) The Good Fight (2017–2021). Recently she has starred on tv in a new thriller, The Beast Must Die (Britbox) and in Channel 4’s gripping mini-series Deadwater Fell.

In 2021 Cush will play the title role in Hamlet at the Young Vic in London and star in Netflix thriller Stay Close. Also in 2021 she joined the Governing Body of The BRIT School.

Martin Locket

Martin was appointed a Governor of the School on 1 January 2016.  He is chairman of the Finance & Audit Committee, and he is affiliated to the Production Arts department in the School.

Martin is an experienced company director and businessman, having made his career within businesses supplying equipment and technical services to the entertainment industry.  He is currently a director Visible Spectrum Europe Ltd (a consultancy to the technical production industry) and works with many high profile technical suppliers, producers and designers within the music and live event businesses.  Between 2008 and 2013 he was CEO of Production Resource Group (UK) Ltd, the world’s leading supplier of entertainment and event technology.

Martin also undertakes regular tutoring and mentoring roles at a number of universities and colleges focussed on the technical production industry, offering support to both the courses and individual students requiring relevant coaching and assistance. His focus is on introducing the concept of commercial thinking to students who are primarily practical or creative. Martin is also a director of Backstage Academy.

Dej Mahoney

Dej was appointed a Trustee of the School in 2012. He is currently Chair of the Governance Committee and a member of the Curriculum & Student Welfare Committee.

Dej is a founding director of All Our Business Ltd (AOB), a boutique legal and business consultancy in music, entertainment and related sectors. Through AOB's activities in event production, Dej became a founding director of both the first-ever, multi-platform Barclaycard World Freerun Championships and of the Guinness Book of Records-accredited Young Voices International, which stages the world’s largest, children’s mass choir concerts. He is also a principal of Musical-Dramatic Arts, Inc, rights-owner and producer of the musical-drama I Dream based on the life of Martin Luther King Jr.

In his earlier career, Dej was Sony Music’s VP of Business Affairs, during which time he was a visiting lecturer on the Commercial Music degree course at the University of Westminster and a contributing author of Digitisation and the Music Industry (IAEL). He became a Member of the Mayor's Creative Commission for London and has also sat on the Governing Board of Epsom College since 2016.

In 2018, he was seconded to the Senior Management Team at Warner Chappell Music and in 2020, he was appointed Non-Executive Chairman of West One Music Group, the leading independent production music company supplying music to the TV and media industries worldwide.

Dej is a graduate in law from Cambridge University and was called to the Bar of England and Wales as a Harmsworth Award winner.

Lakshmy Rajah (Staff Governor)

Lakshmy Rajah discovered a passion for working with young people through early volunteer and Learning Support work. Once there, she never looked back. As a History teacher, she focused on the roots and development of society, along with deepening her knowledge of Teaching and Learning practices. This grew into the path she subsequently followed which complimented her true calling; the well being and development of young minds, as well as their ability to access the education provide. She achieved this deeper skillset through her work as SEN Teacher, Designated LAC Teacher and Safeguarding Lead at a number of other settings.

At The BRIT School, Lakshmy is the Deputy SENCo, working closely with an incredible team of LSAs who are deployed across the school to support young people along their journey to independence and thriving through the Creative and Performing Arts. She works closely with school staff, parents and outside agencies with the aim of building a personalised and holistic package of support for each young person she works with.

Alongside her work, Lakshmy is a lifelong learner, most recently completing her Masters in Psychology. She is passionate about pulling all of these areas of expertise together and in continuing to add value to The BRIT School and young people in the wider community.

Tanya Rose

Tanya Rose joined The BRIT School Governing Body in February 2020. She is one of the foremost authorities in the travel industry. As founder and CEO of respected Sales and Communication agency, Mason Rose, Tanya is recognised as a leading luxury travel specialist.

For many years Tanya has been the trusted travel confidante to celebrities, business people and their families. Known as the voice of luxury travel, Tanya is frequently asked to appear as an expert panellist at a wide variety of industry and luxury brand events. Her travel skill and entrepreneurial vision are recognised across multiple business sectors and by the media. In 2008 Tanya was nominated for Women of the Year. She is the author of a book called Travel Secrets and is soon to launch at digital platform of the same name.

Educated at Gordonstoun, she was a Governor of the School and Chairman of the Fundraising campaign for seven years finishing this in 2014. Since then Tanya has held board positions at The English National Ballet and the English National Ballet School. She has recently Chaired and completed a £36 million Capital Campaign for the ENB and has been appointed Vice Chair of the Development Board and a member of the Council at RADA. She has a passion and skill for fundraising with special emphasis in the Arts and Education.

In addition to her passion for travel, Tanya’s interests include the ballet, opera, theatre and fashion. She is married with one son.

Alastair Webber

Alastair was appointed as a Trustee of the School in June 2019. He is a member of the Commercial Revenues and Fundraising Steering Groups.

Having joined Island Records at 18 years old, Alastair worked there for 7 and a half years, working his way up from an intern position to A&R Manager. He worked across major pop albums for Leona Lewis, The Wanted, Lauren Aquilina, John Newman, whilst signing influential indie-rock bands like Spring King and collaborating with hip-hop legends Wu-Tang Clan. He also signed some of the biggest dance records of the last decade. Such as Levels by Avicii, Fade Out Lines by The Avener and Sonnentanz by Klangkarussell.

Al then left Island Records in 2018 and founded an event called ‘The Other Songs’, which gives songwriters and artists a platform to perform unreleased material to key industry and creative peers looking for songs, ideas and collaborations. The event has now seen over 100 performers in London and Los Angeles, ranging from BRIT School students to legends such as Cathy Dennis, David Foster, Graham Gouldman, Don Black and many more.

‘The Other Songs’ (indie) Records, Publishing and Management company was founded by Al and his brother Billy Webber. Day to day, they work with a roster of over 10 acts with the same ethos as the event – bringing through new talent, with creativity (and patience) and at the heart of everything.

Jasmine Wilson

Jasmine was appointed as a Trustee of the School in October 2019. She is a member of the Personnel and Estates committees.

Jasmine trained as a dancer at London Contemporary Dance School, moving into teaching and arts management after graduating. Jasmine set up the learning department of Studio Wayne McGregor in 1999, developing it into one of the UK’s most successful and prolific dance company learning and engagement departments with a reputation for innovative and high-quality work across the UK and internationally. Jasmine Is a trustee of Rosetta Life and Arts Network Sutton. She was a Clore Cultural Fellow in 2009/10, undertaking a secondment with Tate Britain and a research project on participatory arts projects in Brazil. Jasmine was Community Producer for Pages of the Sea, Danny Boyle’s project for 14 – 18 NOW.
